Zouk Horror (1)
A little too late for Halloween? Actually, this young model had her face painted for a party held at Zouk Club KL in conjunction with the launch of Seed of Darkness, the first local Chinese film to be distributed by an international distributor (Columbia).

Probably a common sight in urban areas, but usually ignored and hardly noticed, up to the point of being overgrown with weeds.

Love at Christmas
Wishing everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May you be well and happy always.
Special note to my readers, thank you for visiting my blog. Especially to those who have taken the trouble to post comments, to tell me which photo they liked, and to criticise my work, thank you. If not for feedback from you, I wouldn't be able to improve myself.
Terima Kasih! (That's "Thank You" in Malay) ... and God Bless You All.

Traffic
Heavy traffic seen at the Federal Highway in Kuala Lumpur. Shot from an overhead pedestrian bridge (obviously). A scene like this is not unusual; it's noticeably worse on Saturdays. Personally, I never liked to travel around town on Saturdays. Weekdays are actually better with less traffic on the roads. Sundays are the best of course.

This elderly man was seen taking a nap on a pedestrian crossing next to a busy highway. It was amazing how he managed to sleep despite the terrible noise from six lanes worth of traffic congestion nearby.

Putrajaya Mosque ("Capturing Merdeka" contest winner)
A silhouette of the Putrajaya Mosque, located in the heart of Putrajaya, Malaysia. The setting sun behind the mosque gave out a unique orange glow around the structure. The glowing effect lasted only a few minutes.
A total of 49 images were selected for the Capturing Merdeka (a.k.a. Merdeka@49) photo contest. This picture, together with 45 others won the consolation prize.

Dramatic Skies
This photo was recently published in Digital Camera Magazine (Malaysia, October 2006 issue) and won the monthly Mission Contest for the theme "Dramatic Skies", beating 10 other contestants (whose photos were also published) to the prize. The stark contrast between the bright and dark areas of the sky was slightly adjusted in Photoshop, giving the viewer an impression of some sort of cataclysmic event.
From the magazine: Why this won: This image is an awesome sight. It reminds us of the scene during the appearance of the alien invasion from the movie "ID4" (Independence Day). It's a picture that stands out from the crowd and attracts anyone to take a closer look.
I couldn't have described it any better than that. :)

Loneliness
This solitary wildflower portrays a sense of loneliness as it sways with the wind. Capturing it was difficult due partly to the nature of my macro lens (which required me to zoom in to 300mm, thus every slight movement from the subject as well as the photographer was amplified several times). I didn't do too well with this shot, but it was a great learning experience.
For all you budding macro photographers out there, remember to use a high aperture setting (in the 11s or so) or you're gonna end up with a shallow DOF like I have here.
If there's one thing I really love about this photo, it's the bokeh. The complete lack of distractions in the background helps the flower to stand out from the photo.
I promise to do better as I practice more. :)

Colour Me Yellow
I got home early today and decided to take a stroll around my neighbourhood. I brought out my camera with a Sigma 70-300mm APO DG Macro lens to try catch some macro shots. One of the photos I brought home with me was this catch of a yellow flower growing wild.

Together
My uncle's house is a favourite photography spot for me, due to the fact that he has the most lovely orchids I have ever seen. A not-so-ideal weather and slight wind made shooting quite difficult. Not to mention the fact that the macro feature in my lens is only available between the 200mm and 300mm range. That means any slight shake of the hands would result in a blurred photo.
This is not one of my better efforts, which means I'll be practising more flower shots soon. In the meantime, this will just have to do. :)

A close-up of a golf ball lying on a patch of grass. This was one of many other experiments with a new Sigma 70-300mm APO lens, which features a 1:2 macro mode between the 200mm and 300mm zoom range.

Soft Amber
It was one of those evenings where the colour of the sky simply didn't look the way it usually did on a regular day. What I liked most about this view was the way the sunset painted the soft smooth cloud a lively orange colour.
My only wish was that I had a wider lens to capture this moment.

Puchong Sunset (2)
Another shot of the sunset at Puchong, Malaysia. If there was anything in this photo I'd like to remove, it would be the trail left by an airplane. It simply looks out of place. Other than that, I thought this picture looked rather good. I could have Photoshop-ed it out, but I'm not the Photoshopping type. :)

This is the entrance to Malaysia's National Monument (Tugu Negara). The original colour shot seemed a bit boring to me so I modified it to a sepia tone and added some vignetting. I wanted to create a slightly oldish look to the photo.

Tugu Negara
This is Malaysia's National Monument (Tugu Negara). It was erected in 1966 to commemorate the heroes and warriors who fought during World War II and the Malayan Emergency of 1948-60. This 15.5 metre sculpture was inspired by an American, Felix de Weldon.
The monument is comprised of seven bronze figures, each representing leadership, suffering, unity, vigilance, strength, courage, and sacrifice respectively.

Canoes - DCM Malaysia winner
This photo was originally shot in December 2005 at Bagan Lalang beach in Malaysia. About one month later, on January 13, 2006 the photo was published here in this very photoblog. In March 2006, I sent it into the Malaysian edition of UK's popular Digital Camera Magazine. It was selected as one of the ten finalists for the month of March. The photo contest ran for another three months, with ten best photos picked from a large submission base in each month. By the end of the contest, there were 40 finalists vying for the grand prize of a Canon EOS 30D.
On 1st August 2006, ten photos were selected from the 40 finalists. Although this photo did not win the grand prize, it did get into the top ten, winning a new Canon Pixma photo printer.
I'm proud of this photo. My little five minutes of fame. :)
